Sengoro (千五郎) Matsui Established a Textile Business in 1868

The Matsui family flourished as the wealthiest farmers for generations in the village of Hikiami (currently Karakoto). In 1868, the first year of the Meiji Period, Sengoro Matsui of this family foresaw a new generation coming along with the Meiji Restoration and established a textile business focusing on cotton hakama skirt fabric and producing items such as taizu belts. Sengoro led the first generation pouring his efforts into the textile business with unfeigned hand weaving and steady dealings. Matsusaburo Matsui of the second generation succeeded his father and expanded the business region to Shibukawa as well as the Hibi area (currently Tamano City) dealing with more clients and sub-contractors. The business was successful in receiving orders from nearby Kojima as well as far away warehouses including those in Kyoto, Osaka and Hyogo. This resulted in Matsusaburo of the second generation gaining an unshakeable trust and wealth.

The eldest Matsui daughter from the second generation married Gentaro Matsui who took on the name Matsusaburo Matsui and started the third generation. He started learning tatami mat bordering from Buhei Matsui who is part of the Matsui family from 1921 which led to the mass production of tatami mat borders as well as leggings throughout the 20th century. After that, sales routes were developed all over the country which led to an increase in business. However, the outbreak of war in 1941 led to scrapping of all the weaving machinery to make room for aircraft part production in the same factory as a subcontractor of Sumitomo Tsushinki Industries which was later incorporated into Kojima Tsushinki Industries in 1944.

Growing with the Leading Tatami Mat Border Manufacturers in Japan

The company changed its name to Kojima Industries when the war ended in 1945. They produced and distributed agricultural equipment and metal goods for daily use. From 1948, Tadao Matsui from the fourth generation became the focal point bringing the textile business back to life. In 1951, the name was changed to the current Matsui Orimono .

Tadao Matsui from the fourth generation utilized his superior business skills to expand his customer base nationwide. At the same time in which Matsui Orimono grew to be the number one manufacturer of tatami mat borders in Japan, they were hiring many sewing technicians who came in masses for work from places such as Sanin and Kyushu in order to establish a production system which produced everything at their plants.
During these times, Matsui Orimono provided assistance such as paying for school entrance fees and tuition at schools including part-time high schools and culture workshops to learn skills such as flower arrangement, tea ceremony, dressmaking and knitting in order to provide a high level of refinement for their workers while they were employed. Takao Matsui of the fifth generation succeeded the business and the current president Katsuji Matsui of the seventh generation is taking on new endeavors such as “jeans border patches” in collaboration with a local jeans manufacturer and incorporating border designs with character motifs such as Pokémon*. Matsui Orimono has been producing high quality tatami mat borders while utilizing its technology which has been passed down for generations. They continue to maintain their long standing traditions as a pioneer company in the Kojima area which accounts for 80% of tatami mat border production.
